UWI Convocation Hall / Proposal / 100,000 S.F. / Architecture / 2014

The UWI Convocation Hall, the winner of an international Design-Build competition held by the University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine Campus was designed as a bold, iconic architectural expression reflective of the progressive vision of the thinkers at the UWI St Augustine Campus. As the first building that students see upon entry into UWI and the last building they visit at Convocation before departing, the Welcome Center is a transparent glass cube reflective of the students’ blank psyche upon entering the university while the Convocation Hall is a bold white modern cuboid with a picture-frame style glazed front façade. In addition to being a metaphor for the students transformation over time, the building itself is raised upon pilotis, shading a student cafeteria and casual seating area from the hot tropical sun. The 4000-seater Convocation Hall can be divided into 3 different arrangements for exhibitions, meetings and lectures when it is not being used for convocations during the annual graduation season.
